QUANAH AND FRIENDS - STORIES
Part Ten
This is the story of Homer who was Quanah's half brother from a previous litter.
Homer remained a feral kitty, living outside with his (and Quanah's) mother. Mr. and Mrs. W fed Homer and Mama-Cat, and Mr. W built them a cat house to live in. In the winter when it got very cold, Mrs. W put a heating pad in the cat house.
Homer was black with a white face, paws, and belly. Unlike Quanah, Homer was a tiny guy, only about 7-8 pounds. Being a feral, he was very nervous around people, but would come to eat and sleep.
In January 2002, he was badly injured in a fight and got so sick that Mr. and Mrs. W were able to catch him, take him to the vet for treatment, and keep him confined in the house until he was better. During this time Homer became less nervous and scared of people but was still a wild kitty.
After he went back outside, he became a little friendlier but still kept his distance. He would even allow Mrs. W to pat him once in awhile. And he started to bring home gifts for his new family, a dead mouse, a pizza slice, a bread crust, and leave them on the front door mat.
The most wonderful part of Homer was his purr. For such a little guy, he had the purr of a lion. People described it as though he had swallowed a chicken, the loud chirrping of a bird, the rumble of a train. When he purred, you could hear him 20 feet away.
Early in 2003, Homer started to come into the Williams' house, all on his own, no coaxing, no invitation. He would drink water, eat some food, walk about the house, want to be loved and petted. As though he suddenly realized how nice it was to be an in-door kitty.
Homer crossed the Rainbow Bridge on March 10, 2003 from severe diabetes. He will be much missed, but the Williams know that somewhere a new kitten will be born who will have the purr of a lion, and maybe, just maybe, someday that kitty will come to visit them.
