TODDLER MITTEN PATTERN
IN SPORTS WEIGHT YARN
by Arlene WilliamsSorry, no photos as I gave these away as soon as they were made.
When my grand nephew James turned one year old he needed mittens that were light weight plus had thumbs. The only patterns I could find were either in sports weight but NO thumbs, or with thumbs but in knitting worsted weight. I wanted to make him mittens in sports weight AND with thumbs so made my own patterns.
Materials
Gauge: 24 sts to 4 inches The finished mitten is 2 3/4 inches wide and as long as your child's hand.
- 50 gm sport weight yarn (enough for 2 pairs)
- 3.75 mm (US #5) dpn's
- small stitch holder or a safety pin
Cast on 32 sts and divide on the dpn's as 12 sts, 8 sts, 12 sts on the three needles. Join, being careful not to twist the sts.
Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 10 rows for the cuff.
Next Row: (Decrease Row) * K2tog. Repeat from * to end. (16 sts.)
Work K1, P1 ribbing for 5 rows.
Next Row: Increase in each stitch (32 sts).
Work in st st for 6 rows.
Next Row: Knit across 4 sts, put the next 4 sts on the holder. Cast on 4 sts and continue to knit around.
Continue in st st until desired length, roughly the tip of the baby finger.

Row 6: * K2, K2 tog *. Repeat * to * to the end (12 sts).
Row 7: * K1, K2 tog *. Repeat * to * to the end (8 sts).Fasten off leaving an 8 inch tail. Thread through the sts, pull tight, and close the top.

Slip the 4 sts from the hold, pick up 6 sts around the opening (10 sts).
Knit 7 rows or the desired length.
Decrease to 5 sts by K2tog around.
Fasten off leaving an 8 inch tail. Thread through the sts, pull tight, and close the top.
Make the 2nd mitten in the same way.
